Le Tour De France

Le Tour De France attracts the most live spectators out of any sporting event in the world.  However, it is renowned as one of the most complicated races in the world.  Here is my explanation of Le Tour.

Overview
22 teams take part in the 21 stage race around France and its bordering countries over the course of 23 days.  The teams compete for 4 main jerseys as well as 2 other awards, the best team awards and the most aggressive rider.

Maillot Jaune (The Yellow Jersey)
The yellow jersey is worn by the leader of the general classification.  This is the competition to finish the tour with the shortest overall time.  It is the main event for most watchers of the tour and has been awarded since 1919.  Most teams have one rider who they help to try and win this Jersey, e.g. Chris Froome for Team Sky.

Maillot Vert (The Green Jersey)
This jersey represents the best sprinter in the Tour de France.  Points are awarded for winning sprint stages and intermediate sprints.  Intermediate sprints are sprints on flat parts in the middle of some stages for which points are awarded.  Many famous races use a green jersey to represent the best sprinter.  These sprints often give spectators the I credible spectacle of lead out trains and sprinters competing.  Most teams have one sprinter who they help to try and win this jersey, e.g. Mark Cavendish for Dimension Data.

Maillot á Pois (The Polka-Dot Jersey)
This jersey represents the best climber in the Tour de France.  Much like the Green Jersey points are awarded for winning stages, but these are awarded for hill top stage wins.  There are also classified hills in the middle of some stages for which points are awarded.

Maillot Blanc (The White Jersey)
This jersey represents the best young rider in the overall classification (under 25).  This is often won by riders who will be favourites for the yellow jersey in the future.

Best Team
This is awarded to the team with the lowest time when their top 5 riders are added together.

Most Aggressive Rider
This is awarded at the end of each stage who is the most exciting and attacks the most on that individual stage.  There is a large cash prize for this.

Teamwork
Teamwork is a huge part of the Tour de France.  Each of the 22 teams have 9 riders. Of these nine there is usually one yellow jersey competitor who is called the leader and one green jersey contender who is the sprinter.  The rest of the team work together to help their leaders gain time on the rest of the field or prevent time losses.  These riders will happily sacrifice themselves for their leaders and are not judged on there positions in the standings at the end of the tour but on their leaders' position.  Some teams, such as Team Sky, work solely for the yellow jersey and some, such as Team Dimension Data, work solely for the green jersey.
